Mastering Genesis Calibration: How to Use Your Calibration Tray for Any Seed Mix

At RTP Outdoors, we often get questions about the right seeding rates for specific seed mixes, like XYZ mix, or even for custom blends that haven't been tested or published on our calibration chart. While we'd love to test every seed blend out there, it's simply not practical. There are too many options, and with new mixes constantly being developed, it’s not possible to account for every combination.

But here’s the good news: you can use your calibration tray to figure out the right planting rate for yourself!

The calibration tray isn’t just for checking the rate of the seeds you’re already familiar with—it’s a tool you can use for any seed mix or blend, even ones you’ve never worked with before. With the variable clutch on the Genesis, you can fine-tune your planting rate with incredible precision, even down to the tenth or hundredth of a pound. This level of accuracy allows you to adjust for different seed types, mixes, and conditions based on your needs.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Collect seed with the calibration tray: Spin the drive wheel 26x to collect seed in the calibration tray.

  2. Weigh the collected seed: Measure how much seed has been dispensed into the tray. Then take the weight of the seed in pounds and multiple it by your Genesis model-specific multiplier to get the output of 'pounds per acre'

  3. Adjust the settings: Compare the 'pounds per acre' seed collected with the planting rate you want and adjust the settings on your Genesis machine until you hit your target rate.

This method gives you complete control over your planting process, and allows you to experiment and customize seeding for your specific conditions. Whether it’s for a new seed mix, varying ground conditions, or just exploring creative blends, you’re in the driver’s seat.

The point is—when it comes to mixes we haven’t tested, we can’t provide a set rate. But by using the calibration tray, you can easily figure out what works best for you. It's like the old saying: Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day; teach him to fish, and he eats for a lifetime. We want you to feel confident in your ability to fine-tune your machine and experiment with different options. Get creative, and you’ll discover that your machine can handle a lot more than you might have initially thought.
